A reliable result starts with a defined scope, compatible tools, and a safe work plan.

Define the scope first

List every surface separately: walls, ceilings, baseboards, doors, frames, closets and cabinets. Record repairs, stains, existing gloss, texture and access. A room that looks simple can require substantially more labor when furniture remains, several colors are used, or high areas need special access.

Core tool kit

A practical interior kit includes a tape measure, bright inspection light, painter’s tape, floor and furniture coverings, scraper, patching tools, sanding tools with dust control, caulk and gun, angled sash brushes, roller frame and covers, tray or bucket with grid, extension pole, stir sticks, clean rags and a wet-edge plan. Choose tools for the coating and surface—not by price alone.

Roller cover selection

Sherwin-Williams explains that roller material and pile depth should match both the paint type and surface texture. Shorter nap is intended for smoother surfaces; longer nap reaches deeper into texture. Always confirm the coating maker’s recommendation because an overly long nap can add texture and splatter, while an overly short nap may leave holidays on rough walls.

Before starting

Confirm ventilation, lighting, ladder stability, electrical and trip hazards, access to water, product labels and drying conditions. Keep children and pets outside the controlled work area. Do not begin coating over an unresolved leak, active mold, loose paint or unidentified damage.

Article 2 · Preparation

Surface preparation and when primer matters

Paint performs only as well as the surface beneath it.

Clean, sound and dry

Remove dust, cobwebs and loose material. Degrease kitchens and frequently touched areas using a cleaner compatible with the substrate and coating. Sherwin-Williams advises cleaning walls and trim because grime and stains can interfere with adhesion, then allowing surfaces to dry before taping or coating.

Repair before coating

Open and fill cracks appropriately, patch holes, feather repairs, sand ridges and remove dust. Caulk moving joints only with a paintable product suited to the joint. Recurring cracks, soft drywall, discoloration or bubbling may indicate movement or moisture; coating them without correcting the cause can hide a problem temporarily rather than solve it.

Primer is a problem-solving layer

Primer may be warranted on bare drywall or plaster, porous patches, repaired areas, glossy surfaces after preparation, severe color changes, tannin-prone wood, stains, or substrates requiring a bonding or specialty system. Primer is not interchangeable with cleaning or repair. Follow the selected primer and topcoat technical data sheets for compatibility, surface preparation, spread rate, temperature and recoat time.

Test uncertain coatings

Older glossy coatings, unknown finishes and adhesion failures deserve a small test area. Do not aggressively sand or disturb paint in pre-1978 housing until lead risks are addressed. If adhesion, moisture or substrate type is unclear, professional evaluation is safer than guessing.

Article 3 · Materials

Choosing interior paint, primer and sheen

The right finish balances appearance, cleanability, durability and surface condition.

Start with the room’s demands

Bedrooms and living areas usually prioritize appearance and touch-up; halls, entries and children’s spaces need more resistance to contact; bathrooms and kitchens need products approved for their moisture and cleaning conditions. Doors, cabinets and trim typically need a harder, more block-resistant coating than ordinary wall paint.

How sheen changes performance

Benjamin Moore describes satin as glossier and generally more stain-resistant and durable than lower sheens such as eggshell. Flat and matte finishes reflect less light and can visually soften minor surface variation, while higher sheens emphasize defects and application marks. Product technology varies, so compare the technical sheet rather than assuming every eggshell or satin performs identically.

Color decisions need real samples

Screens and printed images are not dependable final color standards. Test the actual product and sheen on the real wall or a movable sample, then examine it in morning, afternoon and artificial light. Undertones can shift next to flooring, cabinets, counters and existing trim.

Read the product documents

The label and technical data sheet control coverage, thinning, application, temperature, drying, curing and cleanup. The safety data sheet describes hazards, handling and first-aid information. A low- or zero-VOC label is useful information but does not replace ventilation, safe handling or consideration of the complete formulation.

Article 4 · Technique

Measuring paint and applying a consistent finish

Use measured area, product coverage and a controlled application sequence.

Measure paintable area

For walls, add each wall’s width multiplied by height, then subtract substantial openings. Add ceilings separately. Multiply by the planned number of coats and divide by the product’s stated spread rate. Sherwin-Williams reports that a gallon typically covers about 350–400 square feet, but texture, porosity, color change and application method can alter real coverage.

Plan enough material

Keep the same product, sheen and color together. Boxing—combining compatible cans of the same finish and color—can reduce visible variation. Do not assume one-coat marketing means one coat will meet every substrate, color and appearance requirement. Follow the product specification and evaluate uniformity after full drying.

Maintain a wet edge

Work in manageable sections. Cut cleanly at edges, distribute paint evenly, and roll before adjacent paint loses its workable edge. Load the roller consistently, avoid pressing a dry cover into the wall, and finish sections in a consistent direction. Excessive reworking as paint begins to set can create lap marks and texture differences.

Drying is not curing

A surface may feel dry before it reaches service hardness. Respect the published recoat time and curing guidance, especially for doors, trim, cabinets and washable coatings. Temperature, humidity, film thickness and air movement affect the process. Avoid scrubbing, sticking items to, or heavily loading a fresh coating before it has cured.

Article 5 · Florida conditions

Humidity, moisture, mold and indoor air

In Tampa Bay, moisture diagnosis and ventilation belong in the painting plan.

Do not paint over moisture problems

Peeling, bubbling, staining, soft drywall and recurring mildew can indicate a leak, condensation or high humidity. EPA guidance is direct: do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces; clean up the mold and dry the surface first. The water or humidity source must be corrected or the problem can return.

Control humidity and drying conditions

EPA says moisture control is the key to mold control and notes an indoor relative-humidity goal below 60%, ideally 30–50%. In Florida, exterior humidity can limit the benefit of simply opening windows, so the ventilation and conditioning plan must account for outdoor conditions and product requirements.

Ventilate and isolate

EPA recommends increased ventilation for products that emit VOCs and following or exceeding label precautions. Protect occupied areas by controlling dust and odor migration, maintaining safe fresh-air movement and coordinating with residents who may be sensitive. Never direct contaminated exhaust into another occupied area.

Choose the coating after fixing the cause

Moisture-resistant or mildew-resistant coatings can support a suitable system, but they do not repair plumbing, roof, envelope or ventilation defects. Confirm that the substrate is dry and stable and that the selected primer/topcoat is approved for the room and cleaning demands.

Article 6 · Safety

Lead safety, PPE, cleanup and paint disposal

Know when ordinary preparation becomes regulated or hazardous work.

Pre-1978 homes require special attention

EPA states that renovation, repair and painting that disturbs lead-based paint in pre-1978 housing can create dangerous lead dust. Paid contractors performing covered work may be subject to the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule. Homeowners should not assume ordinary sanding and cleanup are adequate; identify the risk and use lead-safe practices or qualified professionals.

Use hazard-specific protection

Gloves, eye protection, footwear, hearing protection and respiratory protection must match the task and product. A dust mask, filtering respirator and vapor cartridge are not interchangeable. OSHA’s respiratory-protection framework prioritizes controlling contamination through measures such as ventilation and substitution before relying on respirators; workplace respirator use can require medical evaluation, fit testing and a written program.

Ladders and work areas

Place ladder feet on solid, level ground, inspect the ladder, follow its labels and duty rating, keep the body centered, and maintain stable contact. CPSC advises having another adult available as a spotter for relevant home-maintenance tasks. Keep tools, cords and coverings arranged to reduce trips.

Cleanup, storage and disposal

Follow the coating label for cleanup and storage. Keep containers closed, labeled, protected from freezing or excessive heat, and inaccessible to children. Never pour paint into drains or onto the ground. Florida DEP identifies paint products as common household hazardous-waste items and directs residents to local programs; requirements vary by product and county, so verify locally before disposal.
